Indroduction

Post by Beeza »

Greetings All
Allow me to introduce myself. I have become the proud custodian of investigator 563 No 57 known as Mayhem which I acquired from vfborg at Hervey Bay.
The first thing I did on acquiring the boat was to go sailing for 3 days. Then I started to pull it to bits. In order to strengthen the outboard mount Victor had secured
a piece of 19mm formply to half the transom. This has now been removed, the transom repaired and ply secured to the inside to brace the mount. The interior of the
boat was covered in a thin carpet like material. This has been removed and after much glue removal has been mostly painted white. There was also no centerboard or
pipe for the lifting wire which had been glassed over.
My home port(for want of a better word) is Lake Cootharaba in the Noosa river. The deepest part is about 1.9m but mostly 1m or less. The Investigator is
ideal for the lake with the keel being better than a centerboard bouncing along the bottom. One problem I encountered was the rudder blade being 900mm long. I found
myself raising the blade half way then using 2 hands to steer. In order to overcome this I made a new blade 550mm long of laminated timber with a NACA 12 profile and 2
kg of lead cast into the bottom of the blade to help it sink. I also made the blade semi balanced. It looks a bit odd and I hope it works I then made a new centerboard of
the original size but made of laminated hardwood with 4kg of lead to help it stay where it's supposed to. Its 18mm thick with a NACA 8 profile. It just fits in the case and
I hope it does sink and stay down. The new lifting wire pipe is made of 25mm conduit painted white.
While researching Trailer Sailers in order to decide which one I wanted I was astounded by the amount of information on restoring maintaining and improving
Investigators on this site . My compliments to you all for the information freely shared for everyone to access. As a result of reading about Geoff's efforts with Qumbu I have
strengthened the bulkhead by laminating 12mm ply to both sides. With new standing rigging I feel confident tensioning the rigging correctly without the deck sagging. I feel the
Investigator lends itself to the introduction of modern technology while retaining its original design brief of a stable laid back cruiser.
The only other problem I have is the name Mayhem. I don't like it. While the first attempt at rigging and launching may have seen the boat aptly named, once on the
water it was smooth sailing. On reflection after a 10k ghosting run across the lake back to Boreen Point last time in the water the name has been changed to "lifes Good"
I look forward to meeting you all on the water.

Welcome to the fold Jeff . Terrible losing a member and boat but great when the new owner shows up here again. Looking forward to your contributions . Interesting mods. There are many variations on the 563 mentioned on this site . I doubt any two are setup/ rigged the same.

Welcome, Jeff.
I would be interested to learn about the performance of the centerboard when you go out again. At least a wooden one won't rust!

The teacher in me suggests "Lifes Good" should read "Life's Good". An abbreviation for life is good. :D

Dr Peter

Making the centreboard and rudder in timber is the carpenter coming out in me. I will be happy to share my observations of timber centreboards particularly if they are successful and yes you are absolutely correct and my new stickers do contain an apostrophe in the correct place . By the way I can normally spell Introduction correctly . But then I only went to school to eat my lunch.

In my experience most students come to school because they like recess and lunch so please don't apologize for that.

BTW, knowing about the use of apostrophes is one of the least useful skills for boat ownership IMHO but I'm glad you or your signwriter picked it up.

And, can I say I'm already envious of you, Jeff. I just wish I had an inner carpenter to come out. No such luck I'm afraid, but the inner idiot usually makes the odd appearance.

Looking forward to reading your posts.

Ar dear, the old spelling monster  I got picked up on tsp for quoting the MSB slogan "you're the skipper, you're responsible" as your. My excuse was my iPad has auto complete . I have become quite adept at very fast one finger typing by using the autocomplete and it spells "your" unless you get the r in. Trouble is I have gotten so fast I rarely complete a word or check it. My wife and most of my friends are assistant school principals or principals . The rest high school teachers . I am constantly getting picked for incorrect spelling in emails   .

My standard retort now is they are all Luddites and spelling is now antiquated

The last word on spelling goes to Shaun Micallef who copped flak for calling his first show "The Micallef Program". So, he called his second series "The Micallef Programme" and his third series "The Micallef Pogram"

Ps they are all hopeless carpenters :D ( my friends that is .....dunno about Shaun Micallef)

By the way this post was needed to celebrate World Emoji Day ;)

Welcome! For the name if twer me I would choose May or Maypole. Anyway the wood centreboard should work, as our lightweight aluminium one does ok.
