Explodo stoves apparently banned.

http://www.expeditionaustralia.com.au/2 ... as-stoves/

This was reported on "Other Sailor Place"and above is the link. I can't find any other references on google though. If it is true I suppose it is not all that surprising. The big issue has to be the cans I guess . With thousands coming from OS production bases and now retailing as sometimes less than a dollar in Oz it does not take much to assume quality control may not be up to scratch. If your $5 radio fails you miss "late night live" , if your $1 canister fails you wind up scared for life, blind or maybe dead.

I have finally tracked down and purchased a single burner Maxie spirit stove on gum tree which I'm sprucing up for Spritzig II to replace my double Maxie which took up too much space. The explodo stoves always seemed too good to be true, purchase price and running cost wise. Guess they were! Does not inspire you with confidence , the line in the story that Fair Trading have revoked the approval . Although as a retired public servant after 33 years I am not remotely surprised. I originally had the Primus model in the list and later replaced it with a Gasmate from Bunnings when it got rusty. If I find further links on this in my net surfing I will put them up.

Edit
Ok here is the official link . The word banned is not used but most popular brands are clearly no longer approved and it is recommended consumers don't use them at all

I apologize to FT it was the gas certifier who revoked the approval. All the good public servants I worked with always had someone else to blame

All

If you a looking for on board cooking alternatives I use a small metho stove sometimes but prefer my JetBoil. Its small compact and safe and bought originally for hiking but turned out perfect for a quick cook on Aminee. I often make a cup of tea mid-sail with no issues. You are not going to cook a roast on it but for small cooking jobs it does the work perfectly and is fast. Highly recommended and safe. Btw solo sailor Webb Chiles uses one and recently sailed 5000nm cooking only on this, not a bad recommendation

Cheers

Even though I have purchased a single burner maxie metho I still like the speed of gas for a quick cupola on the road or the boat. As I have half a dozen of the explodo stove canisters, which are not banned as they are used in other products I decided to experiment. I've become a Deal Extreme customer over the last year and for about eight bucks they were selling a mini fold up gas burner. These attach to the Camping Gaz brand of propane canisters that have been around since my youth and popular with ultralight hikers. However for about 12 bucks DX had an adapter and stand that would use the cheap explodo canisters .

Last week we did a few nights freecamping up the Hunter Valley near the vineyards and we tried the device out .

The two components fold up quite small

They remove the safety problem of the xplodos as the cylinder is over 35cm from the flame so it can't heat up

When folded up the two components pack into two included plastic boxes shown next to canister for scale

No I don't cook on the carpet square. The burner has its own piezo ignition, so no matches needed.

Need a second post for the forth image. This is our little coffee espresso machine which gives two good strong shots for the travelling coffe addict which we use on the boat and in the van. It will work on metho but it's slow.

All in all the little burner surprised me . I really though it would be a toy but the castings are all clean well made and it's not half bad for the price . I disassembled the connection pipe fitting and put gas fitters tape on all the threads just to augment the fairly Friday looking seals just to satisfy myself, but really the overall product quality given the price is great. No affiliation blah blah. You could easily cook inside with the cylinder out in the cockpit although for big meals I think I'll still use the maxie. The trivet bits that hold the pot fold in for small things like our coffee gear or out for larger stuff like our nesting cookware kettle . I tried a larger saucepan and it worked fine. These are small enough to keep in your sailing bag or cheap enough to have two , one permanently on the boat which is what think I'll do.

Checked and now $10.44 link below I don't see the explodo adapter so they may be out of stock .
