Good point Phil batteries and fuel not good. I also dislike those openings in the cockpit lockers near the transom leading into the cabin - I glassed them in but a messy and difficult job.
I also experimented with siting a 40watt solar panel between the mast and hatch connected through the hatch frame into a regulator next to the stbd forward window then into the batteries, has worked well for two years charging one battery while the other is in use. i have a jaycar voltage display that plugs into a cig socket on the elect panel to monitor the batteries.

Only took 4 years for me to reply, but Yara's battery is in a battery box in the starbd cockpit locker. The box is strapped to the bulkhead at the foot of the berth. This locker also houses the stern anchor, chain and warp in a milk crate. Power cables run in as conduit behind the Stbd shelves along the berth. Some wiring across to the port side under the cockpit sole aft, and across the forward side of the "oriental" bulkhead forward.

Mine is behind the companionway step. A plywood panel had previously been glassed in against the bottom of the boat between the bunks behind the keel. I have an off the self plastic battery box strapped to the panel. The master switch is mounted on the bunk side adjacent. The switchboard is built into the back of the stairs and covered with and acrylic cover

Last week I finished moving the battery from under the step to the starboard cockpit locker then wired up a duel battery isolator (with charge options) with about $30 worth of bits from Jaycar. Im pretty happy with it, pictures here -

I've covered over the vent holes from locker to the cabin, next job is to put a butterfly vent from the locker out into the cockpit area to vent the batteries.
