I was accused of trying to be a "cool dude" on TSP by agreeing with everyone , part of the reason I left . So I'm going to firmly plant a foot in both camps again just to prove it. I tend to enjoy the more genteel aspects of sailing also, the noises, the water, the seagulls and pelicans. I dont race, but I'd be a fibber if I said I did not enjoy those afternoons flying along at hull speed with the boat at 40 • heel and the sails full. I don't seek it out but it's fun when it happens.
In my early working years I was into cars , drove them too fast, wasted too much money on them and bought wheels magazine. Now they are an expensive nuisance that I only buy to tow my other toys. Other hobbies , some semi professional like music have come and gone but my enjoyment of boats has never changed I've just gotten better ones.
Progress is a strange thing. We have all embraced new technology in one form or another. 50 years ago ago four blokes who maybe didnt live to see the Internet were sitting in a pub and the conversation probably went something like this.
"
The son in law bought one of them fibreglass boats"
"Plastic boats , what a load of tommy rot'
"yeah give me a nice wooden boat any day"
"Yeah , me too next thing they'll have stainless steel rigging"
"..........and lights without bulbs"
(together )" Ha ha ho ho ha ho ho
"
