Back in Black ...well red, white and blue.

Post by Ozzie »

I have just finished the haulout and additional refit of Spritz and she is now back on the mooring after a nice sail a few days back.

All up I did more than intended but it was all an improvement . Pete, I am sorry but the only pics I forgot to get were interior ones ... but I'll be on the boat later this week and I'll get them then. I will list the refit as individual topics, so Ian in you wish you can shuffle them later into the tehnical stuff if you wish. All up L.J. and myself polished and primped her for two weeks but now have full LED light system with new SS nav lights , LED bulbs in the masthead and stern light fittings, old cabin flouro replaced with 7 LED swivel strip light and front cabin with 4 LED swivel strip light. Interior lighting is also now fused like the main lights .

As well I replaced the monster 750 CCAmp Truck starter battery I had in the cockpit locker with a new small sealed battery in the forward locker with new HD wiring and main switch to the existing terminal block. To accommodate this I made a false floor for the front storage well to mount the battery in this area and found I could fit our explodo stove under it in its case ( only for outside cooking ) and it was out of sight and mind till needed (no gas , I bring cartridge with me each trip). 5 litre water bottle and a reduced size tool box now all fit neatly in this compartment out of the way. Pics coming.

Next came new storm boards and aluminium channel ( a one piece for the mooring and a split for sailing) New Oak handrails. Replace the rest of the rigging including forestay and new extra non swivelling fixed forestay ahead of the original. A few other bits I'll mention in other posts with pics.

Thought I would add a bit here for those looking at replacing their interior lights with LED .... the pictured 4 LED light from bee cee ef was not strong enough for a main cabin light. It was ok to see with but did not feel like real replacement for the old single flouro which was really a nice light to sit around in and cook or read. I wired it in and then decided to remount it in the forward area and got a 7 LED swivel from WW which they demonstrated for me in the shop. much better. You can get 40 odd LED cabin lights but I think that defeats the purpose of switching to a small battery. The 563 cabin is hardly a ballroom.

I've got the seven LED version and it works well as a reading light when tilted down, and general lighting when reflecting off the cabin ceiling. I kept the old fluorescent light and only use it if I need bright light for a short time.

New bit with photo. I have always thought the front locker area of the 563 needed a false floor so I built one from 12mm ply as I mentioned above. Sits on the lip that sticks out on the back of the bulkhead inside the compartment. I then bolted a 18 mill strip to the floor at the back to lift it a little higher. I can post dimensions but its an easy job to just cut a near enough piece of card board to use as a template and then trim it up with a pair of scissors till you get it just right. I then cut it out and chamfered the front two corners till they say neatly on the slop of the hull. later I may add a little foam rubber to stop vibration , not that I've noticed any.

My mission this fit out was to get a place for everything and everything in its place so that the only thing floating in the cabin was our sailing bags and the sail bags and table in the front cabin. So far I'm close. My two burner metho stove is a pain and may get the big A. The explodo stove now has a spot under the false floor above along with a few packets of reserve food and a jumper. This stuff is not needed regularly and thats why its here.... the battery makes it so access is not a one handed job. I have as per photo a 5 litre reserve water supply and my regular tool box made from a small makita style tool case. All fits neat and tidy.

Interior shots.

Spritzig II had, when I bought her an infill for the oriental arch as it has been dubbed on this forum. Apart from the obvious function it also doubles as the stiffening support for the mast above and I get no deflection at the mast base. I did not realise till recently that it is solid timber, about an inch thick . must have been a tabletop or large beam the previous owner had spare. Door is a standard timber louvre door. On the top part of the door is a small shelf with fiddle rail I bought complete from a garage sale for 10 bucks... apart from looking nautical it is great place to put wallets and mobile phones so you see them when leaving the boat. Above the door is my new LED strip light which looks like it was made for the spot and to the right on the bulk head my IR alarm system, which in a cabin that size, terminates the eardrum 'with extreme prejudice' as they say in spy movies :o

The rest is pretty standard with a well made rack that takes crockery for four also by previous owner. You can see in this pic our sleep system which has the standard 3inch vinyl covered mattress on top and underneath another 3 inch cloth covered bed trimmed up from a standard clark rubber single camping mattress onto which we added a layer of dimple foam. When in normal day sailing mode we have the cloth mattress under as shown and flip the blue ones side to side so the dimple foam at the bottom allows air to circulate under the whole lot (also good when locked up for long periods on the mooring ) to stop mildew. In sleep mode we swap the blue ones on the top (and swap sides because of the mirror shape) to have the cloth ones on top with the dimple foam facing up. All up you then have 6 and a half inches of foam and some comfort for sleep. Works for us.
