Newbie Brisbane

Post by alfie »

Hi folks

New to the forum, live in Brisbane
.

Been looking at investigators. One for sale says it's a 1997 model. Did they make them then or am i being mised?

They look good. Comparing them to the Compas Coreel boats.

cheers

Welcome Alfie.
It doesnt matter when the boat was made, the condition of boat and trailer are the key issues. Most, however were made at least 30 years ago.

Careelers please forgive me, but the Investigator 563 and the Careel 18 are quite different boats. The Investigator 563 is basically a small yacht, with a ballast keel, that makes it self-righting- ie in a knock-down from a strong gust, even if you can't ease the sheets, she will bounce back up. The Careel 18 Mks 1 and 2, are basically an enclosed dinghy, relying on the shape of the hull for stability, and if you do the wrong thing, can "turtle" and even sink. Boats that rely on the shape of the hull for stability, also tend to move around more in the waves than a ballast keel boat. Careels have a good association, and that is a major drawcard. If you can afford the later Careel versions Mk 3 with heavy keels, they are much safer.

Investigators are for those who want to sail in the comfort of knowing they have a boat that will look after them. I had a Careel Mk1 and sold it to move to the Investigator. Many people also enjoy the fact that there is no centreboard case in the middle of the cabin. On the downside, when climbing on board from the beach, the water may be up to your knees, rather than your ankles.

Thanks for the info Ian.

I think the ad I saw must have referred to the trailer being a 1997 vintage.

The lack of centreboard in the cabin is one of the things that appealed to me with the investigator.

When looking at one, is there any timber hidden in the glass to rot like i've seen in a lot of powerboats?

thanks in advance for any advice

Yes, there is timber laminate in the decks, however I believe it is marine ply. Best way to check is walk on it and see if it flexes a lot. The main cause of rot is insufficiently sealed fastenings penetrating the deck, so take a look at them from underneath and see if you can see any stains. However, the walk test is the quickest check.
