Mainsail numbers

Post by Mark »

My main has the original Investigator logo on it but no sail number. The other day whilst sailing I noticed at certain angles of light the faint outline of where a number existed, seems to be 28 or 26 - my questions:

Does the main number relate in any way to the production number of the boat itself?

And if I could work out the number can one simply replace it?

I dont race so no need to get a number for that purpose, and i realise you can get numbers from YAA but they are expensive

Interested in peoples thoughts on this matter

Cheers

Mark .

As far as I'm aware the sail no was the production number. According to the others there is a matching number under the award plate near the companion way. I don't have one of those as I'm a late production boat 143. If you can read it replace it by all means,
it has no other legal value other than as a serial no.

Good luck

It would be nice if we could list all the sail/ boat numbers we have track of on the site.

Ian B what is the earliest number we have had mentioned on the site and what would be the latest.???

I was wondering the same thing. I also have the original main with the Investigator logo and sail number 166. No design award plate or production numbers anywhere on the boat.I knew mine was a later model because of the double hinged hatch/no outboard well in port locker forward v-berth lockers etc but did they make that many boats?
Interesting

I think No 2 is in Melbourne, and the highest number was around 167, a yellow boat. When I next boot my computer I will see if I can confirm that number.

I am confused - lost a lot of info as we moved websites. I thought Mishka, with a yellow deck, was the last one built, but the IYA lists her sail number as 107. I have attached a pic, maybe someone will add more info.

The yellow deck boat is said to be Mishka.

My boat, Pip, has #127. It was what was on the multi-coloured sail I purchased the boat with. It was an old worn-out piece of rag. I assumed it was the original main as it included the logo too.

Hi all,
In preparing the transom of Olmate for painting I unearthed an image of a number- IYA 156.
I always believed that the sail number 156 was its production number.
Can anybody enlighten me as to its real meaning?
There is no plate anywhere and has windowed dual hinged front hatch.
Its previous name was Aussie.

Looks like that is the number. One of the later boats. The inscription of the production number was hit and miss, so sail number is good enough.

Hi Ian.
Information regarding the photo. The photo was taken at the ramp at Taree following a regatta for Trailer sailers . Mishka won the Investigator division [thought I would throw that one in]. The yellow boat was as you said was the last Investigator made and the only one that was not white. I agree with you that her number was 167 She was called BABY DOLL Mishka's sail number is 107
About 20 years ago a guy contacted the IYA asking if anyone had an old mainsail for sail, as he had just purchased an Investigator minus a main. I offered to sell him an old main ,provided he changed the sail numer by placing a number in front of , or behind the existing number of 107. The reason being I didn't want t see him with a main "defaced" by old gum He promised me on his mother's grave [ or something like that ] that he would change the number. Imagine my surprise when 2 years later whilst sitting on the shoreline at Myall Lakes an Investigator motors past carrying a sail number 107 A quick glance confirmed that THE REAL 107 was sitting just front of me
I suppose it could have been an apparition like The Flying Dutchman, which would have been kind of neat .However I think it's a case of some people can't be trusted

I have confirmed today that my main originally had the sail number 28. I am going to get replacements numbers. This means that if the sail is original that my boat is an early production number. I think the suggestion of creating a list of sail numbers and boats on the list would be a good idea each entry could have as much info re manufacture as is known. Maybe a separate listing on the site for this info only.

Cheers
