So, got the mast up and got all the sails out and found this tucked away at the bottom of the storm sail bag attached to the storm sail. Then to my surprise I find that the Genoa is rigged with a wire luff and no hanks, but is too big to use with this wee little furler. The No2 jib is hanked and obviously fits well and hauls up great. That'll teach me, the only sail I fuly checked was the No.2 and that is why I believed they would all be hanked.

I should of figured this out earlier as the clues were then including a swivel on the jib halyard!

No problem, I thought, there are sufficient anchor points at the bow plate to fit and use the furler with the forestay also attched. So then I tried the little furler with the storm sail which is wire luffed and it was next to useless, causing too much twist in the wire at the top of the sail which would then not unfurl properly. To be fair the furler is ok, albeit a little old, more an issue with the luff I think!

So now I am a little confused at how I proceed. Perfectly happy with the hanked No.2 jib, but what with others? Not keen on this particular furler though either?

Can I use the storm and Genoa without the furler and just haul up using the wire luff acting like the forestay?

Ideas and suggestions please.

Yes, you can use the wire luff sails without hanks. However you are going to need a good luff tensioning system. If the luff length is short enough you could rig a small pulley set at the foot. Not my cup of tea, as handling and changing headsails with that system is awkward and could be a hassle in rough weather.
You could also fit hanks over the wire luff.

Furler is a toy which was really designed for dinghy's way back. If you are going down the furler path I would get yourself a new one the correct size for the job. That one might be ok to use for a screecher set from a sprit or prod off the bow, or a code zero. Put hanks on the genny and stormy - you can buy screw-on piston hanks from a sailmaker.

if it has a wire luff.
just use a mast head halyard not the normal jib Halyard as for the storm sail i think your better getting a new one with some brass piston hacks
to go on your normal jib Halyard.
when the wind pick up and you reef the main
it,s best to not to have a big pull from the very front of the boat by the jib.
unless you are trying to drive in to waves
a big jib will try to pull the boat around in high winds
it just harder to balance the boat.
but some of the guys on here do just that

Thanks, the furler has gone and I am going to source some screw on hanks. Cant afford new sails so this will be the option. I have read that with wire luff, screw on hanks will be fine, but I will reinforce the fittings anyway.

Dont worry, Greg, just the boys having a little dig at each other over the definition of "Heavy" weather.

I invested about $30 on a hand held anemometer, and whilst I havent been able to calibrate it, it is surprising how low the actual wind velocity is, compared to a guess, or sometimes the forecast.
