Just bought a 563

Well, leapt in with both feet-half way through a crewing course and decided sailing may well be for me.
Purchased a 563 from Sydney today. Ex Canberra boat, sail 115 from a quick look, named little nipper. It now resides in Maitland.
Fellow I bought it from had never sailed her, couldn't help with how to rig up, no idea which sail is which etc etc.
So, having never done this before.....where to start!
Oh, and I need to replace the frayed keel cord....is it easy?

Congratulations Boxy.

I'll assume you will be sailing on lake Mac or Port Stephens.

The keel rope, if original, will probably be connected to a stainless cable which will go to your centreboard. If you take apart the bent tube inside your companionway you should be able to access the join. Possibly, as I and others have done the cable/ rope combo may have been replaced with all spectra , 6 mm in my case tied to the centreboard with a buntline hitch. See my earlier posts . If this is the case you will have to support the boat off or half off the trailer so you can drop the cb and replace the lot. Good luck. It's worth doing. A busted keel pull or ring can ruin your day. It happened to me and I managed to get a rope sling under the boat to hold it up temporarily . That was in summer . I would not like to do it mid winter or deep water.

Ozzie, Thanks for offer of help and the advice. I'm going to have a go at rigging in my drive way - just in case there's bits missing. I'll post my success or otherwise. Same same for keel rope.

Help!
I've searched and searched but cannot work out my headsail rig.
Fore stay is on a swivel. 200mm above that is a pulley which I assume is the headsail halyard, and about 150mm above that is what I think is the spinnaker halyard. Then at the mast head is another line that runs in the mast.
Any ideas what's what?
I want to be able to use the furler.

...because I'm a lazy sod and it will save me a lot of typing. You will see diagrams of the standard forestay/ furler set up. Reluctantly , because you should only read the sensible comments from Ian B and myself and ignore those from others who have never owned a 563 or used this system and yet offer "absolutes" rather than opinions. Ian and I have differing opinions on the system but they both come from personal experience. Also note comments from careel owners who also use the system without complaint.

Coda. It's hard to tell from your picks but you may have a few extra bits on your rig . For instance the standard 563 rig didn't use the front sheave at the mast head. I think the external block was for the spinnaker . You seem to have an internal line to the front sheave. Having said that try rigging as per the diagram and see if it makes sense. The small block shown at the bottom for tensioning the forestay is really overkill in my opinion unless you have one supplied . I have been manually tensioning it for 12 years. You don't need it that tight.

As I say over on the dark side, try the system a few times . Everyone eventually rigs to taste and personal opinion . I doubt there are two 563s on this forum rigged the same. You may come up with something new and we will all swap to your method. That's how forums work

ozzie i looked at your post and i could not get it and i can put mine up

let,s keep it simple

you have one back stay which go in to a Y to the back of the boat
we have two side stays one each side of the mast here is a old photo of one

next you need the cable that come from half way down the mast on a horseshoe

sorry had to make this a two part post
Now the jib sheet clips on to the bow cable
you should have a rope coming out just below the horseshoe
this is the jib line to rise the sail at the front of the boat.

if you have other line in rollers at the top they are mast head lines
put a clip on them to hold them some were until you use a spinnaker sail
or a asymmetrical spinnaker like this
note it is not running up the fount stay cable
