I am planning for the distinct possibility of painting the hull of Aminee later this year. I have a good place to keep the boat while these operations take place, but need advice on they types of paint best used and number of coats etc. I have read of many different approaches. I prefer to use specialised marine tolerant paint and not really interested in the often cheaper approaches I have read about which use house paint! I don't want to be doing this job again in my lifetime. I do not need to worry about antifoul as she is stored dry on land between sails.

All advice etc appreciated and welcomed.

Mark, I was impressed by Crusier Petes efforts on his 563. He had more detailed info on tsp, I recall. He was discouraged to DIY by some of the “happy folk” over there but did an excellent job I thought.

there are two types of paint single pack brush /roll on go norglass
and two pack spray on go jotun or International

i have done both and right now doing a 28 foot boat in the two pack
they are not cheap at $115.00 a tin

you will need a primer two coats and a top coat two coat
make the primer a different color to the top coat
so you know when you have painted over the primer.

go with a paint system do not mix brands i can give you more help if you need it
remember preparation is the key that 80 % of the work paint is just 10%

Hi Mark,
International yacht paints have a great booklet called Boat painting and color card.
You may be able to download a copy.
I took my booklet along to a boat paint store and got the advise I needed from a guy that paints boats. He also recommended paints to use and what prep would be required. Funny, I went there to buy International paint and came home with Hempel and Altex tins.
I went with an oil base for above the waterline simply because the boat was already painted with an oil base. On the other hand my 563 is painted with rubbish and I can blast the paint off with a pressure cleaner, I'm going to respray it with flowcoat.
Make sure when you go to buy the paint you have decided how you are going to apply it. Paints like International Perfection 2 pack,, go on beautifully with a roller and tip application. Not all 2 pack needs to be sprayed. Like Ozzie said, check out Cruiser Pete,s work and stay clear of the out house paint.

Totally agree mate . Those posts were the beginning of the end for me with TSP. If Cruiser
Pete had been put off by the negative comments of TSP alumni he would not have attempted his repaint. And as we have said that repaint turned out as a template for DIY ( well done again Pete). Jeff Moody accused me of bickering with people for pointing it out. After a few others in tsp agreed with me publicly he deleted my membership.

As I stated many times over there to deaf ears . Knowledge is something that should be shared around like chips at a party . Not used like a cricket bat to beat people around the ears with.

I for one have gained much from our little forum and as far as "templates" go others could learn how to conduct a great forum from looking at this one. ( well done Ian B
