INVESTIGATOR 563

I am getting a new insurance policy for the563 as GIO/suncorp will no longer insure moored boats .

After 40 years brand loyalty they have told me to P off.

How nice of them.

As my other policies become due I intend to tell them the same. Karma is a b*tch.

I only had 3rd party insurance of my boat before (all they would allow for the last 3 years) but now its not an option with the company I have switched to, so Im back to comprehensive. A good thing really given that the old girl has some nice bits put on her over the last four years. My new insurer requires a breakdown of bits and Im wondering what a set of second hand replacement sails would cost for a 563.

Any guesses, recent quotes, would be appreciated. Totally of the top of my head Im saying for a similar set of 30 year old sails still in good nick... 700 to 800 $. Main , No1 and No2 jib.

People on the 'other' forum change sails as often as I change socks so I assume there are arrrlot of second hand sails on the market.

Ozzie, my main last yr cost about $900 new and storm jib about $600 a year earlier as indications

I think my company only does agreed value. Its hard with sails. As I'm just a recreational sailor I would only replace mine if they were disintegrated (or stolen) I guess 2nd hand stuff is available but would need modifying if I want it close to the old sail sizes.

Thanks atles, I have revised my second hand estimate up to $1200.

With the low cost of used boats at present it would be almost worthwhile to look around for an Investigator for sale with a good set of sails. You would then get a set of sails or two and a boat and trailer thrown in for free!

I paid a little over two grand a couple of years back for a brand new main and furling headsail with UV strip.

If you are running a hanked-on headsail then the possibilities are endless second hand. Even a big second-hand main recut down the luff and a new bolt rope put in would not set you back a lot. Its the sort of work a local canvas maker can do.

I would just put the word around that you are looking for old sails. The racing boys change theirs quite often. I would not overlook OTB boats either.

I had about a half a dozen sets myself until the rats decided they made great homes and good eating.

Hi all:

This is a topical thread for me, as I'm replacing my (possibly original) mainsail, and getting a new genoa as well, which I've never had before.

I'm getting both made by Tony Bull at Bull Sails Geelong. They will be cut from Dacron, with brass hanks on the genoa luff, and plastic slugs on the mainsail luff, with a loose foot, battens, reefing points, etc.

There'll also be sail numbers and Investigator insignias.

All up: $1400.

I figure they should last another few decades of cruising and the occasional race here and there.
