handrails

Post by Brendan »

i have purchased some 7/8 hardwood for my handrails on cabin top, do i need to use backing plates under the nuts or is the glass strong enough to get away with flat washers. i am going to drill and through bolt instead of screws.

Brendan, I think washers would be ok. you have a fairly thick section above with the handrail support, which is timber under the glass I suppose . I have been using screws so far and they have not given way yet with my 97kg bulk, but bolts are definitely safer. For what its worth I used same size in tassie oak and deck oiled them. so far they are great and I am moored.
