Hi Guys, sorry I have been off line for a couple years.
I'm sure this has been an issue in the past, but I have been away for some time.
I am having trouble hand winching my boat on to the trailer and am considering electric due to arthritis.
I have seen some electric winches at Super cheap and Repco but I am confused about the following:
What "Weight" am I pulling? Is it the total mass or the towing mass? What mass is the boat? What mass is the retrieving mass?
Has this been an issue in the past?

You are pulling the mass of the boat, which is somewhere around 900 kg. Add the friction of the rollers and the slope of the ramp+tilt, and maybe the number goes up to circa 1.5 t.

I bought one of those cheapie Aldi winches, set up a mounting arrangement, (mounting bracket around the winch post), but have never tried it. My primary interest is the first part of the retrieve, where a side wind is slewing the boat, and the idea is to use the winch remote whilst holding a rope on the stern to keep her straight. The mechanical winch is still there for the final wind on.

If you are going to go 100% electric, my recommendation would to go for a quality winch with a heavy duty rating. Then you also have to work out your car electrics, as the power draw is large and you dont want to flatten your battery, plus you need a heavy cable from the battery to the winch. My plan is to use a spare battery in the boot of the car.

A small point I would make is that electric winches can limit you to just the one tow vehicle depending on how the winch is wired up. I sail on a Timpenny 770 with an electrical winch. I can launch the boat with my car but not retrieve it - I have no way to operate the winch.
