This is strange. Normally the u bolts have big washers and sometimes even a stainless plate with two holes, and a solid backing pad. In fact the backing pad can be too thick, and lacking in taper.

Made up my new chain plates for the shrouds, been a get around to it job for a while now and not a moment too soon , the new ones are 5mm thick replacing the 2 doubled up 1.5 mm thick stainless Ronstan straps and have also gone to 2 of 5/16 screws replacing the 1/4 screws that where badly deformed .

I ended up having to repair the sunken nut holes in the chain plate mounting pads and re drilling them and adding a 5mm backing plate.
