Boat Names

Post by geoffr »

Hi all:

I'm thinking of renaming my boat -- given that it now looks significantly different from when I bought her under her previous name (which obviously meant something to the first owner, but has no such association for me).

I'm therefore wondering if there is a log of Investigator boat names anywhere, so that I can avoid naming my boat something that's already in use?

Many thanks,
Geoff

I don't know if anyone has a register, but I do know one name that is multiple, and that is "Sherlock".

Yep bad luck to rename a boat.

Elvis told me

Geoff I say go for it . The link below has link part way down. I have read the correct proceedures before somewhere. You need to first remove all gear with the old name on it and then rename it before putting it back on. This is not so silly and may have it's roots in practicality. If you sink and are in the lifeboat waiting rescue you want gear flaring around or onto shore to be for the right boat.

Oop scratch that the link is dead.

Try this one...... ;) it's the stuff I read.

Hi Raya:

That's a great list; well done!

I notice you have a few boats listed twice, including mine: QUMBU and QUMBU OY255 are the same vessel.

I'm not sure why a previous owner only put the number on both sides of the bow hull, and the name on the transom (only).

Some boats have numbers; many don't it would seem. I wonder if there is a definitive law on what's required?

Cheers,
Geoff

Add "No Way" to the list. Don't know previous incarnations but believed it spent life in Canberra and on Sth Coast NSW and a few years in a shed before I bought her..
Only need sail numbers to race - hull numbers, boat code, waterways regos, looks after everything else.

Geoff,

Sorry about the double listing. I started a spreadsheet years ago to keep track of Investigators that popped up on forums or in advertisements. I must have come across yours twice and added it to the list without realising it. One day I'll do a bit of house work and clean up the entries. I've got matching sail numbers for a sub set of the boat names plus sail numbers without names. The total number that I have come across over the years would be around half the Investigators ever made.

Regarding the registration numbers, here in Qld you used to have to register your boat if the engine was 10hp or over (hence the number of 9.9hp motors that were made). I'm not sure if this still is the case. Other states may have had similar rules which is why some boats are registered and others aren't.
