2.2 hp Mercury
Hi all,
I have an old one which I intend to try on Olmate to lighten the stern load for balance when racing though I wouldn't expect it to cope with too much current or wind. It just has a little prop.
I took the head off to investigate the pathetic dribble coming from the cooling water telltale and cleaned out heaps of salty gunk. Good so far.
Question- what should the head bolt torque be?

I have a generic Mercury/Mariner manual at home. Will try to look it up for you. Year model?

My Mariner manual (same as Mercury?) says 10 Nm for the 2 HP version head.

So that's Newton/metres. What would that be in Foot/Pounds?
The archaic wrench I have has megapascals or ft/pds.
My 'bit of strain' on the wrist has no numbers.

10 Nm= 7 ft lbs. Not really a lot. Mega Pascals is pressure rather than torque.

10 Newtons at 1 metre is 10 Newton metres and is the same as 1 Newton at 10 metres or 100 Newtons at 0.1 metre.
10 Newtons/metre would be something like a loading on a beam; 2 metres would imply 20 Newtons.
Just like AmpHours really. And no, your fridge does not use about an Amp per hour...

I'll be happy that my bit of wrist strain= 7ft/lbs.
Lightening the boat by taking a few unecessaries out and shifting weight forward (the battery in the starboard locker shifting to the forward end and substituting a lighter one and wedging the fuel tank forward in the port locker seemed to make a fair difference in performance.

Zeb- you need to go sailing more often. Guess you must have retired. Those of who should have, but still struggle in the workforce, have to deal every day with so called qualified engineers who make worse mistakes.
