Tragedy at Valentine, Lake Macquarie

A terrible incident this week at Valentine where I launch and retrieve at haulout and often walk. There have been many incidents like this over the years locally and statewide. It once again shows the importance of PDFs, even doing mundane stuff like using a tender. Condolences to the family involved.

Second thing I thought may be worth reporting on happened yesterday walking Grizzlegutz down at the Swansea channel area, near the bridge. A log the size and thickness of a railway sleeper drifted past on the runout tide. I won’t start a debate on climate change , but I’d suggest with the increase in wind, rain and generally wilder weather that seems to be happening obstacles like this will probably become more prevalent in our waterways. Even hitting this in an Investigator at hull speed would probably do damage. A planning hull clobbering this at speed would be a lot worse. I’m going to be more aware in my little orange cat from now on.

Sorry to hear about that Ozzie, lifejackets are life-savers when worn.

Those wild floods carrying some large debris out too, a time to slow down a bit or even wait ashore until its all clear.

I spotted a nice TS for sale on Gumtree. At Swansea, Lake Mac. A Princess 18 $6.5k. It's very shallow draft, light displacement and roomy with a 4hp. Would suit lakes, rivers and estuary sailing and be easy to tow and launch.

Another bump. Hope all are ok in this current flooding disaster and just a reinforced message that there will be shiploads of debris in whatever areas you sail. Be mindful of hitting stuff you’re not expecting and best to those affected by flooding. ⛵️
