Yes Andrew, those inflatable PFD's are certainly great value. I also have them. What I can't understand is that I have two perfectly good $500 fully automatic Stormy Seas jackets with zip out sleeves ( were best on the market at the time ) and yet we get told that they no longer comply any more and the 150 PFD's do. Sit them side by side and ask yourself which you would prefer to be wearing in a man overboard scenario? I know what I prefer. Those 150's MUST have the optional crutch strap to prevent them riding up over your head, even though they don't come with them.
I think the authorities have gone completely mad in this instance

Yonks ago I used to listen to a lot of sailing podcasts when driving long distance. I remember one guy saying “why would you go to sea in a boat that can sink?”. I think same guy sailed in Oz and NZ but inflated three big tractor tubes inside the cabin when crossing the ditch between. Solo sailing and he only needed access to the nav station, the galley, the head and the quarter berth . Rest of the boat was full of inner tubes.

Have to watch that movie.
Interesting guy, those inner tubes might be good for salvaging too? Just spotted a "free" large cruising boat half sunk in innisfail on FBMP. Reckons MSQ (maritime safety qld, department) is going to landfill it if no one removes it off the mangrove bank..

You need ping pong balls Andrew  …No seriously.

I grew up reading Carl Barks stories in the early 60s. This guy single handled invented much of the Disney universe but was never credited for it till years later when the internet allowed fans to track him down in his 90s. He must have been a boat guy as many of his stories revolve around boats and the sea.

The technique description in this 1949 story was later used to avert a disaster after an animal stock transport ship sank in ?.threatening a massive environmental disaster. The Mythbusters tv show later proved to viability of the original concept on one of their shows. Now it’s standard practice to use air bags if not ping pong balls and I’ve seen it used locally including on a timber cruiser that sank near my mooring.

Just as an aside. Carl Barks was a master story teller, because his medium was Disney comics he rarely got much recognition but he was an inspiration to people such as Spielberg and George Lucas. The opening to original Indiana Jones movie was straight out of Carl Barks. If you have grandkids you could do worse than read some of his stuff to them.
