Hi again all:
Apart from my gunwales, I'm also installing a new VHF transceiver.
I've just completed my MROVCP, and learnt during that course that my old 27MHz radio was next to useless, mainly because few if any responsible (rescue) agencies monitor those frequencies anymore.
So it provides a very false sense of security in an emergency.
Considering what I've spent on all sorts of other stuff for my boat over the past 3 years, I think another $265 for a good radio and aerial is a worthy safety investment.
Cheers,

Re your comment on VHF v 27 MHz.
Firstly congrats on getting a VHF, best thing you will invest in I can assure you. But your comment about 25MHz is not quite correct.
I am a radio watch officer with Marine Rescue NSW and we, and all MR stations in NSW monitor 27MHz. Agreed its terrible and we get bizarre receptions at times from Perth and Darwin due to Skip, and then can't get people on the ramp 30 meters away communicate with us. However its still being used by a great many boaties as I find when on duty. The consensus is that its not going away any time soon.
I however always tell people when they ask what type of radio to buy to get VHF. 27MHz remains a back up and it does not hurt to have it on board. I always have mine on when sailing along with VHF ( mainly to find out what the other half are up to!)
PS Still awaiting to hear about your toe-rail replacement before i do mine as i am also going the timber solution
best
Mark
