Roller reef with a vang!

Post by Greg »

For the purists that use their roller reefing systems spotted this thing on eBay for $20!

One of my pet hates of the roller reef system is the lack of vang, this thing would solve that all though it may cause damage to your main?

Hi Greg, they would be no good as a vang because they would slide forward along the boom towards the mast.

Yeah I did think it was probably going to chew the sail up, even using it for your mainsheet with a traveller directly underneath I can’t imagine it would be good for the sail. Cheers for the education on these things.

Totally agree with the roller reef boom being a really convenient quick way to pack up the main sail at the end of the day and not good for much else. If your out in enough wind to need to reef the sail you need proper control of it.

Gday Greg, there is nothing wrong with those claws if they are used right, only necessary for inboard sheeting. The good thing about them is that they pull down from the top surfaces of the boom either side of the main and the pull is always from the shortest point to the sheet pulley mounted to the boat as no matter what angle of the boom is to the centre line of the boat. As for reefing, as David said, you can slab reef onto the boom which will put the reefed amount of the sail sitting on top of the little rollers on the claw and won’t hurt the sail at all.
Cheers
