On good advice fitted one after a couple of nasty previous experiences.
Well, we were caught out yesterday off Wollongong in a sudden NE blow and big sea. (Predicted for later in the day). The plate worked amazingly well digging the outboard in and not cavitating once! We were bounced around a lot but arrived safely at Port Kembla ramp with a big queue of battered fishos!
Highly recommend this mod as an excellent safety feature.

Hi Mark
Mine is a Yamaha 8hp long leg. Had a look at a merc 5hp photo and it should fit yours. The bcf anti cavitation plate above has a nifty slot in each wing that slides onto that mini anti cavitation plate above your prop. You then mark through the bolt holes onto your outboard, drill through and fit the supplied ss bolts and nuts. Simple and very effective. Tough plastic so no corrosion problems.
Size is 190mm x 190mm each wing .
Happy and safe sailing.

Re: Anti-cavitation plate / hydrofoil
Emrys, that's an interesting discovery. I have bought a set of these 2nd hand for my poly fishing boat ( as yet unfitted) mainly to help it onto the plane but had not considered putting them on the ts outboard to help with cavitation. From your description I assume it dampens the hobby horsing effect in rough seas. Is this only at certain speed?
How do you go for flushing now? You would need a decent sized container, will it fit in a garbage tin?

I used one too on my hi thrust Yamaha 8hp. Very happy with it. It also keeps the prop away from the rudder.

That's right Ozzie, stops hobby horsing giving you lots more forward momentum and therefore control in a big sea. I found the more power I gave it the more it dug in - very impressive. Even though we were thrown around I always felt in control. (Hard convincing the missus though!)
Yes could be a prob flushing the motor in a bucket although I use a flushing boot and hose. The Yammie's a heavy bugger 26kg so try to reduce lifting.
Peter also right in that plate protects rudder hitting prop. All good.
