The Straight Dope is a great little site everyone should visit. It explains in simple language lists of things you may have wondered about or did not even know you did not know in a way you can understand. I often jump online for a quick read when waiting for the mrs in shops or wherever . The above link is a classic which I more or less knew but makes more sense when explained. Also see below
