Loose feet

Post by geoffr »

Hi all!

I'm wondering if any other owners run their mainsails with the foot loose, instead of with the foot bolt rope slid along inside the boom channel?

A friend says it's better to have the foot loose (obviously pegged at either end still) as this allows you to loosen off the sail in lighter winds to get better shape.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

I think the loose footed concept is the latest thing, but it does place more stress on the clew. If your main was made for fixing to the boom, then its shape would not be optimum for a loose foot, and you could tear out the clew. If you were buying a new main, then loose foot would be an option.
