Re: Heavy weather sailing
Jeff Toghill- "Trailer Yachts" 1985: "Roller reefing is popular with a number of of trailer yacht manufacturers, although it does tend to leave the reefed mainsail in a somewhat baggy condition. Jiffy reefing is by far the most popular... Apart from the speed of operation (it) leaves ...

Re: Heavy weather sailing
Roller reefing was the fashion in the 70s. My Bluebird 22 had it, but the problem I found was "droop"- as you roll the sail on the luff becomes tighter than the leech, and the end of the boom droops. It is possible to overcome this by stuffing something like a sail bag in the sail as you r...

Mast Compression Posts
The original owner of Yara, Gordon Berry, believed that the compression of the mast on the hull caused the rigging to go slack. Gordon was the winner of more races in Yara than any other Investigator 563, so I guess he must have been on to something. He fitted a wooden beam under the mast step, and ...

Re: Investigator 563 sail dimensions
Peter The standard Investigator 563 jib is already pretty small, so I think the recommended size is OK. As we normally are not out in the open ocean, our definition of "storm" is not quite the same as a blue water sailor. All I can say is that what we have works, and in an extreme case dro...

Re: Heavy weather sailing
Peter's technique is also good. It is certainly the way you have to go if you don't have, or cannot change, to the storm jib. The beauty of the long keel of the Investigator 563 is that it is very forgiving of sail balance, however, with a relatively larger main area, it is easier to balance perfect...

Re: Heavy weather sailing
Matt Be assured, you have bought a boat which will look after you. (see the review I posted yesterday.) My technique, which is a very conservative one, is carry full main and standard jib up to say 15 knots. Above that start by changing down to the storm jib, and at say, 20 knots, reef the main. You...

Re: Time for a new trailer
Robert The retaining nut should not be screwed on tight. As the hub heats up things expand and it needs a little play. Typically they say turn it till it tightens up- but not a heavy torque, and then back it off between a quarter and a half turn. Always fit a new split pin. If possible I would hang ...
